Alpiq InTec Ost AG in Landquart was commissioned as a full-service contractor by Swisscom to renovate the cooling infrastructure of a commercial building in Chur following a concept created by Alpiq EcoServices AG. As the most important tenant and the main user of cooling energy, Swisscom is replacing the cooling systems, which have reached the end of their life cycle, with two highly efficient Turbocor chillers and a CO2 heat pump with a total refrigeration capacity of 800 kW.
Alpiq EcoServices AG developed the concept for the renewal of the cooling systems for Swisscom. In view of requirements in terms of energy efficiency, operational safety, operating costs and investment costs, a number of different possibilities were put forward. In close consultation with Swisscom, it was decided to opt for the Turbocor chillers in combination with a CO2 heat pump for the recovery of waste heat.
As a full-service contractor, Alpiq EcoServices AG manages and oversees the external execution planners. The experienced team from Alpiq InTec West AG in Interlaken is providing the CO2 heat pump that raises the waste heat from the cooling system to a high temperature. The heat consumers can be supplied directly, without additional heating by means of the oil-fired boiler.
The new chillers achieve an energy efficiency ratio (EER) of up to 8. This means a saving of electrical energy of over 50% compared with the existing chillers. As a result of the high temperature, the heat pump with a natural refrigerant reduces CO2 emissions by 20 tonnes per year. Thanks to Alpiq InTec, Swisscom now has a sustainable cooling infrastructure, and the cooling energy costs will be reduced by a good half.
