Stadium extension: More space for fans
To accommodate even more football fans the stadium was extended with seating for another 10,000, increasing its overall capacity to 42,500. Alpiq was responsible for all electrical installations related to the extension.
Diesel generator sets: For emergency backup too
Rather than being powered over the conventional electricity grid, the St. Jakob Park stadium drew on its own source of power during Euro 08. Thanks to a 600 kVA diesel generator set, power supplies inside and around the stadium was assured for all Euro 08 matches played in Basel. And a second backup generator set could have been activated in emergencies to guarantee seamless energy supplies.
External facade: Swiss flag for the national squad
During all games involving the Swiss national team, the façade of St. Jakob Park featured a gigantic Swiss flag made up of red and white fluorescent lamps mounted on dry-air-filled elements.
Comfort and safety: for spectators
Spectators at St. Jakob Park could view information screens showing the latest match updates relayed by the stadium's own TV channel. And once the final whistle had gone, new lighting installed by Alpiq along public pathways made sure fans found their way home safely after an exhilarating football experience.
